Date of Find: Aug. 31, 2009

Type of Model (Crane, Bunny, Spiral, etc.): Spiral

Where Did You Find It?: Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery, it was in a tree.

Circumstances of Find--Any Details You Want To Provide: I was walking with my mom and she looked up and noticed the silver in the spiral which had reflected off the sun. She actually gave it to me and immediately I wanted to become a part of whatever it was :) I too am an origami lover and it was a very exciting find. It most definitely was the highlight.

Type of Model (Crane, Bunny, Spiral, etc.): Spiral

Where Did You Find It?: Antelope Valley Cemetery, Coleville, CA, 26 miles NW of Bridgeport, CA (Hwy 395)

Circumstances of Find--Any Details You Want To Provide: What a great idea. We stopped to walk through the Antelope Valley Cemetery. In unlatching the entry gate I noticed the origami ornament at my feet. I thought perhaps it had blown off one of the many florial displays left there for a loved one. I did not see any other similar decorations in the cemetery and decided to find out who had left behind this treasure. Your time and talent are very much appreciated and I hope many others will find happiness in displaying your wonderful work of art.

Circumstances of Find--Any Details You Want To Provide: Part of my job on Owens Lake is to take panoramic photos of the lake at the same 7 locations every day. Your Initials: LS

Date of Find: 4/16/11.

Type of Model (Crane, Bunny, Spiral, etc.): Crane

Where Did You Find It?: Rest area near Mammoth.

Circumstances of Find--Any Details You Want To Provide: Pretty funny actually, I am a teacher and I took my class on a field trip to Mono Lake and several other points from Rancho Cucamonga to Lee Vining. This group was from Fontana, a lot of "city kids/people," from a community college. They were fascinated by the water pump where the crane was left. I guess they must think all water pumps have origami cranes on them because none of them picked it up. I saw what it was and picked it out of the pump. I feel like it was for me. I loved looking at your pictures and I was really glad to find the crane. This trip was just kinda sad for me, and that was a little bright spot. The quote does have meaning for me-’The bird of paradise alights only upon the had that does not grasp’. Maybe the quote has nothing to do with my life and I am just trying to find a way to make it fit, but the red heart you glued on the tag had all the meaning in the world. It was very symbolic of someone I lost, maybe telling me to cheer up through you. Again, maybe it's just a coincidence, but I would rather believe that it is not.

PS–I attached a picture of the crane, sorry it's not that exciting.  I didn't think to take a picture while it was on the pump.  It is in my motel room at the Bristlecone Motel in Big Pine.

Circumstances of Find--Any Details You Want To Provide: Me and about 32 other students from Cal State Long Beach's Environmental Science and Policy program were on a field trip on our way to Owen's Valley when we stopped at the Coso Junction for lunch. I found this beautiful surprise on top of the hand dryer in the women's restroom. We all admired its beauty while eating our sandwiches. <3 "an improper mind is a perpetual feast. " - a great way to begin our adventures.

Where Did You Find It?:  Sertoma Chili Cook-Off, Gardnerville, NV

Circumstances of Find--Any Details You Want To Provide: The quote.."I believe in a god-I spell it "Nature"... does have a lot of meaning for me. My husband and I ran away from civilization and lived in a tipi out in the wilds of Idaho when we were first married. It's been a long, strange trip ever since, mostly back on the grid, but I will always remember those days in the wilderness. I learned that nature is not generally kind but it does operate on a sort of rough justice that I still find appealing. Thanks for the moment!

Circumstances of Find--Any Details You Want To Provide:  I think this is an awesome way to have some fun, thanks for allowing me to get in on the fun, I thought it was so random, but when I figured it out what it was all about, it became very cool!

I wasn't sure about the quote "I believe in a god- I spell it Nature" I wasn't sure if you were replacing God with Nature? Not sure, didn't get to me, just being completely honest. :P

The quote "how helpless we are, like netted birds, when first we are caught by desire!" Great way to end the day! Thank you for such a beautiful, simple but elegant random act of kindness. I will definitely pay it forward with one of my own!

Type Of Model:  Butterfly

Where Did You Find It?:  Creekside Inn, Bishop, CA

Comments: At first I thought someone accidentally left their origami butterfly and I was going to take it to lost and found, although I really wanted to keep it. I looked at the back, however and was happy to find that I get to keep the butterfly forever!

I loved it so much because of the quote attached to it, which said "jump and you will find out how to unfold your wings as you fall" which really spoke to me. It is a beautiful quote that everyone should embrace, understanding that we dont always need everything figured out before we jump into life :)

Type Of Model:  Fish

Where Did You Find It?:  On top of the fish food feed dispenser at the Fish Hatchery near Manzanar. How appropriate!

Comments: What a cool surprise.  I had never seen one before but I instantly knew what it meant!  It's a bit like geocaching-- leaving a surprise for someone else to find. My quote is "Lord, there were a lot of lovely books once before we let them go."  I have not researched who it is attributed to. Thanks so much.  It was so much fun!  I was wondering if I just missed you at the hatchery by a few moments?  A small truck was driving out just as we were pulling in.  I will keep it for a while, and let you know if I pass it along somewhere totally different.

Note from Velvet:  Nope, the truck wasn’t me!  And the quote is by one of my all-time favorite authors.  :)

Type Of Model:  Green Spiral

Where Did You Find It?:   I found this on a tree on the trail to Bridalveil Falls in Yosemite National Park in California.

Comments: The note on my Origami says, "Who plants trees benefits another generation." My origami piece was attached to a tree and many of the trees in Yosemite National Park-- the Sequoias in particular-- are some of the most impressive and largest trees in the world, yet they came from the smallest of seeds. I am reminded that even the smallest action can have the greatest impact on a future generation.

Your Initials:  PC

Date Of Find:  9/25/15

Type Of Model:  Spiral

Where Did You Find It?:   Lone Pine Visitor's Center, Lone Pine, California

Comments: I was driving to Lake Tahoe from Chula Vista, Ca. Alone To do some repairs on our rental. I stopped in the center to use their clean restrooms. I found the wreatth in a tree outside. It kept me company through the days of hard work and a whole day when no one texted me. I felt like I was alone in the world but then I would see the wreath on the dash. Made me feel good! I will pass it on but I want to find a special place to hide it. I did like the quote 'there is science, logic and reason, there is thought by experience. And then there is California.' This has meaning to me because my husband and my children are born and raised in Ca and we want to leave to find Mayberry. It is too expensive, too crowded and too anonymous to live here anymore.

Note from Velvet:  Same with us, we are all native Californians who sadly left the state when it got too awful to live there anymore.  We found our ‘Mayberry’!

Your Initials:  Taryn

We had been arguing the whole drive. Type Of Model:  Heart

Where Did You Find It?:  My box at work (Mono Lake Committee)

Comments: The quote was quite timely! I have a hard time letting go of people who I consider friends who do not seem to reciprocate or make an effort to keep up the friendship. I read the quote "A friend is someone who is there for you when he'd rather be anywhere else" and felt better about letting a "friend" go. It was also reassuring, because lately I've been helping a friend through a difficult time (which was difficult to do, but I cared about this person!), and it made me feel like I made the right choice in sticking with him.

Your Initials:  KTL

Date Of Find:  6/5/2016

Type Of Model:  Spiral

Where Did You Find It?:  I found this as I was walking from the Sheraton Fairplex hotel to the Fairplex Convention Center. This was during Califur.

Comments: When I first came across this, I honesty thought it was a ribbon that another furry had pinned to themselves which had somehow fallen off. So, I went to look it over so I could take it to ConOps and that’s when I realized that this was something I was *meant* to find.

The quote on mine reads " The merely difficult we get done right away. The impossible just takes a little longer." and it does kind of speak to me. My current challenges are large and so it has been feeling pretty impossible but this encourages me to just have more patience and somehow get the endurance to get through this.

It's such  great idea I am going to do this where I live San Diego! My kids will absolutely LOVE creating and getting feedback from other. It is "message in a bottle" connecting with people from all walks of life!!! I build website and make this quick so fun!

Note from Velvet:  VERY cool that someone chose to pass along their model for someone else to find, I’m so glad you enjoyed it!  But please, PLEASE, as I ask on my homepage–create your own original Random Act of Kindness project rather than duplicate mine–I’m sure your kids can come up with something amazing and uniquely theirs that they will be proud of!  Please let me know what they create and I’ll be happy to link to it.
